cloudLibrary finds a new home in OCLC
cl oclc

Oakdale, MN, April 2, 2024—Bibliotheca has announced the sale of the cloudLibrary digital platform to OCLC, a nonprofit global library organisation.

Launched in 2011, cloudLibrary is a full-service digital platform that provides millions of eBooks, audiobooks, digital magazines, newspapers, and comics, as well as streaming video to nearly 500 libraries in 20 countries. Libraries make these collections available to their communities through cloudLibrary’s top-rated mobile app, while a web portal makes it easy for library staff to manage their subscriptions. A standalone service, cloudLibrary also integrates with Bibliotheca’s self-service solutions to provide recommendations and digital checkout within the physical checkout experience.

“We look forward to working closely with OCLC to ensure a smooth transition and maintain cloudLibrary’s deep integrations with Bibliotheca products,” said Joe Grillo, CEO of Bibliotheca. “This transition will allow us to focus on our core business offerings in library automation – self-service, security, materials handling, accessibility, and enhanced patron experience.”

The move to OCLC will provide cloudLibrary access to a world-class technology infrastructure and a network of public libraries that serve more than 50 million people worldwide.

“OCLC is a wonderful organisation, and we are excited about what this move will mean for cloudLibrary and the libraries that OCLC supports,” says Matthew Bellamy, President of Bibliotheca.

In addition to the digital assets of the platform, the cloudLibrary team has joined the staff of OCLC, bringing their deep product knowledge and relationships with publishers and library customers.

“We welcome the cloudLibrary team to the OCLC family. This acquisition expands our service to public libraries and reinforces our commitment to increasing access to information,” said Skip Prichard, OCLC President and CEO.

Progress Partners served as the exclusive financial advisor to Bibliotheca in this transaction.

Bibliotheca launches smartShelf borrow to global library market https://www.bibliotheca.com/en-gb/press-release-bibliotheca-launches-smartshelf-borrow-to-global-library-market/ Wed, 21 Jun 2023 16:31:23 +0000 https://bibliostaged.wpengine.com/press-release-bibliotheca-launches-smartshelf-borrow-to-global-library-market/

Bibliotheca launches smartShelf borrow to global library market

Oakdale, MN – 06/21/2023 – Today, Bibliotheca announced the global release of smartShelf borrow, an integrated intelligent-shelving return and borrow solution for libraries of all sizes. smartShelf borrow combines intelligent return shelving with the power of selfCheck to allow instant recirculation of recently returned items. Library users simply place returns on the shelf and technology does the rest – identifying the items, removing them from the user’s account, enabling security, and making them immediately available for borrowing through the integrated selfCheck self-service checkout solution.

“We’re excited to bring the smartShelf borrow solution worldwide” says Joe Grillo, Bibliotheca’s CEO. “smartShelf borrow is a great addition to Bibliotheca’s portfolio and allows libraries of all sizes to automate returns, increase circulation, and free staff time.”

While Bibliotheca’s smartShelf has been widely used in Australia and Europe for over 10 years, smartShelf borrow introduces a new workflow with the ability to borrow right at the point of return. Perfect for “Lucky Day” collections, smartShelf borrow helps reduce wait times for popular items as patrons can borrow these materials as soon as they are returned with no need to wait for reshelving.

“Customers have long been requesting this solution to complement their after-hours circulation capabilities,” says Joe. “By placing smartShelf borrow in a 24/7 vestibule, libraries can offer not only after hours returns, but also the option to borrow recently returned items after the library has closed.”

smartShelf borrow is the newest addition to Bibliotheca’s portfolio of returns solutions, and is perfectly positioned between the basic book drop and Bibliotheca’s large multi-bin sorter and automatic materials handler, flexAMH.

Introducing outdoor holds pickup with integrated Library Information Distribution Platform

OAKDALE, MN – March 7, 2022
Bibliotheca has released the new remoteLocker outdoor solution for library holds pickup and returns. Engineered with anti-corrosion steel and wiring, the new weatherproof book lockers combine the best outdoor locker hardware with Bibliotheca’s Library Information Distribution Platform, uniFi+, which allows the screen to act as a digital billboard to promote library events and services. They feature lighted weatherproof awnings, an IP54 rating, and can operate in temperatures -20°F – 120°F (-30°C – 54°C), allowing libraries to provide patrons with access to library materials and communications in virtually any environment.

According to a recent IPC survey, locker use by consumers has risen 27% in the last year, with 39% of respondents reporting having used a locker to pick up items in the last 12 months. Bibliotheca brings the convenience consumers have come to expect to library service. remoteLocker outdoor allows even small libraries that lack an accessible foyer to offer 24/7 access to library materials.

The new remoteLocker is designed specifically for outdoor use and features compartments of multiple sizes to accommodate small, medium, and large pickup orders and the modular design allows libraries to add additional towers at any time. The lockers are easy for patrons to open using just their library card and come equipped with a barcode scanner as well as a smartcard reader and proximity sensor. Both the original remoteLocker and the new remoteLocker outdoor are the only solutions on the market to offer integrated digital library communications through uniFi+, Bibliotheca’s Library Information Distribution Platform. uniFi+ enables libraries to quickly and easily broadcast promotions and messages to every library screen, including those outside the library building. The Pew Research Center reports that one third of library patrons know “not much” or “nothing at all” about library offerings. Incorporating digital communications into a holds pickup solution allows libraries to spread the message about everything the library provides, increase engagement, and bring new users into the library. Fill out the form to download the product flyer and discover all the remoteLocker outdoor features.

Integrated library communications now available globally with uniFi+

Bibliotheca has announced that its integrated communication system, uniFi+, first released in Scandinavia in 2019, is now available to libraries worldwide.

Unlike traditional digital signage, uniFi+ uniquely integrates with public PCs, Bibliotheca selfChecks, remoteLockers, and other solutions to enrich communications inside and outside the library walls. Developed specifically for libraries, uniFi+ allows content to be pushed to multiple screens across multiple branches while still allowing branches the autonomy to add specialised content for their users.

“Library communication is extremely important and historically, difficult to do well,” says Oliver Martin, Bibliotheca Chief Product Officer. “uniFi+ solves this problem by offering libraries an easy, engaging way to share information, resources, and critical communications throughout their entire library. Whether broadcasting to patrons at checkout or offering way-finding stations throughout the building, uniFi+ allows libraries to get the right message to the right visitor, at the right time.”

uniFi+ supports multiple kinds of content, including video, way-finding, and interactive displays for library polls, quizzes, and educational stations. Content can be easily changed, scheduled, and distributed from the online platform. Customisable templates make it easy for busy library staff to create and broadcast communications within minutes.

“Customers in the Nordic region have been using this technology for some time, and we are thrilled to now be able to offer it worldwide,” says Martin. “The role of libraries is evolving rapidly – they are tasked with creating engaging spaces and communications that cut through the everyday noise. uniFi+ represents Bibliotheca’s latest commitment to help libraries do just that.”
